A few years ago, Tony Maude embarked on a unique project: building a 7ft clinker-built boat entirely from recycled wood. This remarkable vessel, crafted without plans and brought to life from materials salvaged from a London joinery, now graces the waters of Ireland.
In ‘The Poetry of Boat Building,’ Tony shares his journey of creation, blending his love for poetry and craftsmanship. This post includes beautiful photos of the boat and a reflective piece on the artistry involved in its construction.
The Poetry of Boat Building
Along with the Poetry of Boatbuilding, goes the poetry of working in wood. How Odysseus was happy building his raft: At first, felling the trees, for which, as Homer tells us, he was given an axe with an olive wood handle. Then drilling holes, binding the great logs together, before fitting all the bits and pieces: the yard, on which to hang the sail woven by Calypso, the gunwales to keep out waves and storms – let them do their worst! With an oar to steer, and the stars, to guide him safely.
Guitars are also made from wood and have their own vocabulary. Therefore, with the music they make, their own form of poetry. I remember meeting the evening class – God bless the local County Council – for twelve pounds or thereabouts, hundreds of subjects spread out before you! All one had to do was choose.. Looking round the motley crew, I wondered: who among us will complete this task? Will anyone here manage to make, hold and play a guitar? These misgivings to accentuate, I shared my doubts with Gary White:
*GARY WHITE, who began this tale and helped to set the boat in motion+
And also gave it a name!
